Cosmetics: what length of time
Face cream, milk toiletries, shampoo, shower gel, deodorant, aftershave, mask, eye contour, and so on. All cosmetic products we use every day are not eternal. They have a certain life, variable according to their stability. What is the duration and the conservation of cosmetics? The deadline for use of cosmetics appears on the label
Since March 2005, it is required to indicate on the labeling of cosmetics the period of use after opening. (Note that this rule does not apply to products whose stability is less than 30 months). The symbol is a number followed by 'M' capital, or for example 12 million or 6 M. This indication is sometimes difficult to find, small and / or in a visible position.
In addition to the data concerning the validity of cosmetics, the National Institute for Consumer Affairs (INC) has made a series of tips guide published in its consumer warning on cosmetics.
A product non-uniform appearance, color or smell suspect should not be used.
Also open for long products, from one year to another, for example, or having been kept in conditions of extreme temperature. We understand that for example, sunscreen from last year used on the beach should be avoided!
For conservation, avoid temperature extremes and direct exposure to light, precisely when the package is transparent. Avoid wet areas that promote the proliferation of fungi and bacteria. So you should not store his stock of cosmetics in the bathroom!
Choose packages focusing tubes, bottles and dose, compared with pots because they are easily contaminated by the fingers. Also prefer small packages.
Namely also
The cosmetics are the most resistant to those alcohol-based (deodorants, perfumes, lacquers, varnishes …) and solid products (lipstick, pens …).
Most at risk are those water-based, such as cream, milk for the body, but also shampoos, shower gels, and so on. 'Never dilution, as antibacterial not enough', said the INC.
Overall, it must be renewed:
Every 3 to 6 months: mascara.
Every 6 to 8 months: facials (moisturizers, anti-wrinkle, eye contours …), eye-liners.
Every year: sunscreen products, make-up, gloss and lipsticks.
Every 2 years: perfumes and varnishes.
And finally, a little hygiene:
wash your hands before you makeup,
even if your hands are clean, use a spatula and your fingers when you use a cream pot,
Close bottle, jar and tube after each use,
clean regularly with soap and water your brushes and your brushes (hairbrushes, too).
