Abscess (gingival and periodontal)
An abscess usually causes swelling of the gums and is characterized by pain. It still contains pus but it is sometimes not apparent. It is caused by infection of the gums, the tooth or tissue support.
Gingival abscess
The gingival abscess is located in the periphery of the tooth and it is characterized by a red and swollen gums.
Periodontal abscess
The periodontal abscess is located at the periphery of the tooth surfaces along the side of the tooth, but deeper than the gingival abscess. This lesion affects the supporting tissues of the tooth and bone loss is often associated. It is generally caused by the accumulation of plaque under the gums. To treat this disorder, usually requires deep cleaning.
